A release session is a therapeutic space for your horse, where they can feel held and supported to take a deep breath, put down what they are carrying, and facilitate inner and outer shifts.

Just like us, our horse's body keeps the score. The stress of living in the human world, as well as the stress from injuries, traumas, relationship ruptures are held within the tissues (fascia) and nervous system. These connect us from our top to tail, and  all have an influence on feelings, behaviours, body, sense of self and bids for connection.

The body is wise and facilitates much of it's own shifts, we can support our horses best by creating the conditions in which opens this for them. Without a rush for them to let go, or to be 'fixed', but simply a space to honour and ask them 'how are you? What do you need from us?'

Your horse may come away feeling emotionally and physically lighter, clearer and more in touch with themselves and you.

You may come away with a deeper understanding of your horse's inner world, and resources to be the best partner you can be for them.

Who is this session for?

All horses, at any age or life stage.

Because each session incorporates a range of influences and approaches, it will be adapted to meet each horse where they are at. Your horse may need and receive  different things from each session.

They are particularly powerful for horses who:

- Regularly feel dysregulated, either disconnected or reactive and tense

- Are stoic

- Carry emotional or physical tension (both are intertwined)

- Hold previous emotional and physical injuries.

However, ALL horses undergo a huge stress just being in our world, so just like we need to regularly chat to a friend, coach, therapist or counsellor, or see a body work professional, or take time out- our horses do too.

Techniques and approaches the session will draw on

- Attunement: The dance within relationship, creating a felt sense of being seen, heard and gotten.

- Co- Regulation: Finding safety together to hold our horse in our own sense of regulation and safety. To support their nervous system to feel connected and navigate stress in a more sustainable way.

- Vagus Nerve: Stimulating the seat of inner safety helps our horses feel safe, connected and able to access a state of connection.

- Fascial Trauma Release Techniques: Fascia is the tissue that holds us together, storing memory, emotion, tension and trauma. Working with the fascia can be a powerful whole body reset and a powerful way to facilitate internal and external change (Taught to me by Liza Kimble EFTR)

- Equine Sports Massage: Gentle sports massage techniques can facilitate deeper changes and release in the body

- Energy work: Sometimes horses prefer working with more space. This is perfect for rehabilitating touch, and building trust and consent.

- Sound work: In some sessions, I may weave in song. The voice is a powerful source of safety and reassurance.

The science and story behind Equine Release Sessions

The experiences that changed everything

Despite having regular interactions with horses since a young age, I found it wasn't commonplace to learn how to support them with what they were experiencing, physically, mentally or emotionally.

Even when I got my own horse and started exploring natural horsemanship, I still found this area was wildly untouched.

However, during the pandemic, I noticed my gap in expertise and felt inspired to complete a course in equine massage therapy. But what unfolded was several unexpected experiences that changed how I understood and engaged with horses forever.

I started to notice that during each massage, that the horse would show different feelings, signals, signs and interactions. A blink, a turn away, a flinch, a change in how they felt. Each time I noticed, I shifted my response to let them know that I had seen them. This seemed to unlocked a deeper emotional shift within, with unusual releases that rippled through their physical and emotional body.

After their session, many horses felt more renewed, like a new door had opened. Their capacity to connect, communication and ownership of their bodies and thresholds had grown. Their guardians reported changed behaviour, resolved blocks, lighter eyes, ease in defensiveness and tension. The humans who were a part of their horse's sessions often had changes and realisations themselves. For some, it inspired a new path for them, one that felt more equal, where the horse's experience was valued and understood far more. And was weaved into their conversations with their horse.

Eventually, the sessions changed shape, with more energy work, intuition and emotional rehabilitation. Many didn't consist of much touch at all, with very few horses saying 'yes' when given a choice. In fact, saying 'no' felt like a turning point in their process, and when this was honoured, they came alive.

This lead me on a path of exploration, to discover more about...

  • The nervous system: moving from survival to connection

  • How the body holds the score card of what it has been through

  • How important safe relationships are to us and our horses

  • The magic of attunement, and how it facilitates the processing of what's got stuck, and bringing together what has lost.

  • The concept of integrating these parts, so that the self can become more whole.

  • The importance of releasing and realigning the tissues in our bodies (fascia), to release the emotions, injuries and traumas that are held there.

As our horses live in such an unnatural domesticated human world, always giving, or being asked to serve others, with very few spaces safe enough to ask them 'how are you... really?' What do you need?'

This is what this session endeavours to be. A space where your horse can put down their bags, and share how they are unapologetically.

I decided on the word 'release' for these flavour of sessions, as to me, it encapsulates the process of letting go of what no longer serves them. This can span many dimensions like emotional, physical, mental, and also the more abstract ones like expectations, pressure, trauma, patterns and domestication.

I hope that the session provides you and your horse this space, to feel seen, heard and understood. And is a door to a new kind of relationship together.

Exceeded Expectations

Andy Mackintosh - Horsemanship Instructor and saddle fitter

As a person who has horses in for training that have had some issues, it has been so helpful to have Cat to help when I hit a blank with a particular horse. No matter what we did the get  the horse to relax with training she couldn’t. She had all the vet checks, X-rays and scans to check everything was ok. She had so much tension in her withers. She was an ex racer.

Cat came in to do an attunement session and my goodness I couldn’t believe the change. She yawned so many times, Cat picked up on the withers and helped this mare to release the tension and trauma she was holding. I wouldn’t have a believed it if I hadn’t seen for myself! Not only did the mare relax and become more in tune with me, she also stopped all the reacting around the wither.

Cat also helped show us how to help the mare ourselves  during our training sessions and the changes really helped me with the training. I think Cat's attunement sessions really help with the relationship between horses and humans. It allows the horses to feel heard when they are holding onto old traumas. Give Cat a try would be my advice!

Exceeded Expectations

'Cat is simply magic there is no other word for what she does.  My boy Alfie came to me as a shut down 2 year old having been through trauma at the hands of people.  I couldn't help him process what had happened to him, enter Cat!  The first trauma release session Cat did was unknown for all of us, but Alfie knew Cat was there to help and instantly connected with her and allowed her in.  This alone is massive for Alfie to let a strange human into his space and be vulnerable.  This was already testament to Cat's abilities with horses.  Alfie and I already have a good bond but watching him go through this session and feeling him start to let go was mind blowing.  2 hours of going through it was emotionally exhausting for all involved but he felt a lot better afterwards.

He showed us this with all the kisses and nudges we got, along with the release yawns and licking/chewing. Alfie has had a second session with Cat and this time was lot more positive.  He was processing and working it all out, it was a rollercoaster of emotions but ended on a very peaceful note again.  Alfie certainly felt different, lighter, he has finally accepted that he can let go of these horrors and just be him.

I can't explain it in words the bond you feel afterwards and the weight that will be lifted from your horse.  I have learnt so much in just two sessions with Cat and her brilliant workshops, it has all helped me to grow my relationship with Alfie.  I highly recommend Cat and cannot thank her enough for the help so far.'

A loving disclaimer

This session is a space for patience, curiousity, honouring your horse's process and facilitating change not forcing. This is not a replacement for veterinary intervention or a session designed to 'fix' problems. Problems may resolve or shift naturally as a result of the session, but there is no pressure on this.

When booking this session for your horse, it's important that you are invested in them as a being, rather than what they can do for you. This session has the potential to open boxes that are powerful for your horse, and may require a change of approach, input and expectation for you and your relationship together.

There is further support available from me.

Release sessions are not a 'one and done' type session, they represent a space that you can hold for your horse regularly, or having regular sessions to deepen and expand the shifts your horse experiences.
